Therapeutic Vibration

Therapeutic vibration therapy is steeped in history, dating back to the days of ancient Greece when a cotton covered saw was used by the physicians as a way to heal many different ailments. In the late 19th and early 20th century a Swedish physician and inventor spent his life creating more than 70 different devices that were made to help with exercise therapy. Many of his machines made use of vibration to help with their therapeutic treatments. He brought his equipment to the attention of the world by showing at World's Fairs and by founding his own series of health clubs. However he was not the only one experimenting with therapeutic vibration as a way to help heal many of the problems faced by the human body. In 1895 the inventor of the Corn Flake, John H. Kellogg created his own vibrating chair. He claimed that his vibrating chair was the one thing that could cure everything from constipation to headaches and everything in between. While many of his claims were unsubstantiated, the basic theory behind his chair was as sound then as it is today.

The Russians are the ones most credited with advancing the use of therapeutic vibration during the age of the space race in the late 60s. They quickly found that while their cosmonauts were in the zero gravity of space they suffered from loss of strength in their muscles and that their bones lost large amounts of density. To combat these problems their physicians turned to whole body vibration treatments as they had been proven to stimulate muscles improving their tone and the regeneration of bone cells preventing the loss of bone density.

This type of therapeutic vibration was found to be very successful and once it was implemented on future space missions the cosmonauts were able to return in much the same shape as when they left. It was so successful it was used on the Soviet athletes of the 80s to stimulate muscle growth and stamina allowing them to dominate the Olympic Games. German scientists and physicians continued further research into other benefits with whole body vibration therapy and its effect on medical problems like osteoporosis, injury rehabilitation and weight loss among others. In recent years more and more physicians, physical therapists and chiropractors are beginning to see that there is a lot of truth in what has been published regarding therapeutic vibration therapy. As they find out about the advantages of this type of treatment and how well their patients are responding to it, the number of professionals offering these services is growing quickly.
